Our Favorite Things to do in Metamora, Indiana
Travel Back in Time at Metamora Grist Mill
One of the must-see sites in town is the Metamora Grist Mill. This is a three-story cotton mill that was first established in 1847 by Jonathan Banes. Banes was a former contractor on the canal and converted the former cotton factory into a flouring mill less than a decade later. While the mill has been destroyed by two fires in its history, it has since been rebuilt and converted to the two-story building you can visit today.
Visit the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site
Managed by the Indiana State Museum, the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site is another one of our favorite things to do in Metamora, Indiana. Here, you will learn about the history of the canal and how this engineering feat changed Indiana from a pioneer outpost to its label as the Crossroads of America!
Take a Ride on the Ben Franklin III Canal Boat
Located within the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site, the Ben Franklin III Canal Boat is available from May through October from Wednesday to Sunday. This is the only Metamora canal boat ride and is definitely worth the trip. You can catch a ride from noon until 4 p.m. The canal boat is led by horses and your tour guide will inform you of the history behind the canal and surrounding area. This is a great local attraction and a wonderful idea for a romantic date.
Explore the Metamora Museum of Oddities
For a unique attraction, take a trip to the Metamora Museum of Oddities. This site features a lifelong collection of treasures that you can sift through, ogle at, and appreciate. Grab some popcorn at The Smelly Gourmet or a heaping cone at Grannie’s Cookie Jar & Ice Cream. However you decide to indulge, you’re sure to love this quirky attraction!
Metamora Gem Mine & Luna’s Garden Gift Shop
